In 2019, we planted 100 trees.

Creativity, quality, and connection, are at the core of Prairie Bears Cider Co. It plays a part in how we live, how we work, and the product we make.

Kelli Burdek & Brett Mack decided to do a thing.

Starting a cider company may not seem like a linear career path for Kelli, a doctor and Brett, a heavy duty mechanic. But Prairie Bears Cider Co. is no side gig. Making cider out of rescued fruit started as a creative outlet for us during Kellis residency in 2017 but it quickly became something we turned into a way of life. Now were tending to our growing prairie orchard near Alberta Beach and crafting ciders that reflect both our commitment to quality and our love for the community we live in.

“We wanted to do something interesting with our lives.” - Kelli

We love where we grow!

Located in Lac Ste Anne County, we combine the best of both worlds in rural living and urban access. Less than an hour from Edmonton and just off the Yellowhead Highway. We look forward to inviting visitors to our orchard and taproom in the near future. For now, you can find us at Bountiful Farmers' Market in Edmonton.

Why we’re growing our own prairie hardy orchard…

We’ve chosen our varieties based on the blends that give the cider the best possible flavour. A key factor is crab apples. Their acidity makes for an excellent blended cider. They are also incredibly labour intensive. But we think it’s worth it.

Follow along

Our journey has just begun and we still have a lot to do! Follow us for product and orchard updates on Instagram and Facebook.

  • Did you know a cancelled Adele concert helped push our cider dream along?

It was 2017, and Adele was closing out her world tour with two final shows in the UK and we had tickets! Waiting in the Calgary airport to board our flight to London, we checked our phones and there was the post - a sincere apology from Adele but the shows were cancelled. What were we going to do? Well, we got on the flight and made a dynamite vacation out of it anyway!

We spent time touring through Cornwall, UK and the sheer amount and quality of ciders available was astonishing! At that time we’d been foraging local fruit and playing around with home brewing, making some just ok beverages for ourselves but these UK ciders got our imaginations running.

Five years of experimentation, contemplating and another Adele album later, here we are!

It's amazing what a cancelled concert, an ambitious pair of cider lovers, and a few years of learning can do. Thanks Adele!
